About half a million Greater Cincinnati children will soon return to school. More than 50,000 of them are served by a school-based health center supported by Interact for Health.

Getting students and staff into the classrooms is especially important after a year disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Last month, the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommended in-person learning this year.

Families play a critical role in the transition back to school. Some ways you can help:

Prevent illness

Late summer has long been a time for well-child checkups and immunizations. This year, families should add COVID-19 precautions. It's recommended that all children who are eligible get vaccinated against COVID-19. Kids should wear masks, practice social distancing and wash hands when needed, too.

Establish healthy routines

If your child's sleep schedules or nutrition fell by the wayside during the pandemic, the new school year offers a chance to get back on track. Grade schoolers should aim for nine to 12 hours of sleep per night and teens need eight to 10 hours. A balanced diet with fruits, vegetables and lean proteins can also promote learning.

Partner with school staff

Children may have anxiety about going back to school—especially if they spent all or most of last school year learning remotely. Get to know your child's teachers and help them get to know your child. Stay connected to the school by keeping up with emails, newsletters and other notices.

The American Academy of Pediatrics offers general back to school tips and advice for returning to school safely during COVID-19. For both, visit www.healthychildren.org.
